Two of my favorite people —my kids — have left my house and gone to college. My nest isn’t exactly empty because I’m still in it, but it’s a quieter and less crowded place. In reaction to the emptiness, I’ve been cleaning out closets and offloading books, shoes, and assorted knickknacks. So much is written about minimalism, so I think I’ll just say: yes. It’s good to have a few things that really work for you. For me, that means a dress that feels breezy, a blouse that feels dressy, and some comfortable shoes for walking. I think, at this point, it’s less about physical storage and more about mental clutter. I don’t want the care of objects to stand in the way of the care of people. I want the space and time to write, read, have lunch with friends, and lend a hand.
When I am particularly besieged by life, I make war against the things cluttering up the spaces around me but you are exactly right, I am clearing space in my head or trying to. I loved this account of your continuing emergence into the life of an emptier nest. Also, the women you joined sound amazing!!!
I love all of this, and I hope you and I continue our long connection forever and ever and ever.
